Discover the city of Lyon in Rhone Alpes
Event : La fête des Lumières - December 7th - 10th 2005
- Lyon, a City dedicated to light

Every year since 1852 on December 8th, the people of Lyon spontaneously
line up thousands of candles on their windowsills and balconies. Real popular
enthusiasm has joined up with the original religious festival to form an
event that has become an important facet of city life. As the years have
gone by, the festival has continuously grown in size and importance and
the participation of world-famous designers is a clear sign that the event
is becoming increasingly famous on international levels. Now covering a
period of four days, it brings life to all the districts in the city and
gives over 3 million visitors the opportunity of discovering a city transcended
by light. The theme for this year’s edition has not yet been decided upon,
but the event will be realigned to stress the links between urban space
and city life: An increasing number of sites in the Presqu’île, with set-ups
for enhancing the charm of the Rhone and Saone river banks. More conviviality
and public participation especially on the evening of December 8th with
a giant scenography of candles on the Place Bellecour.
